Once upon a time, there was a man who had just moved to a
new village. He was feeling a bit nervous and unsure about whether he would
like it there, so he decided to go and see a Zen master for some advice.
"Master," he said, "I am new to this village
and I'm not sure if I will like it here. Can you tell me if the people are
nice?"
The Zen master replied, "Well, how were the people in
the town where you came from?"
The man frowned and said, "They were nasty and greedy.
They were angry and lived for cheating and stealing."
The Zen master nodded sagely and said, "Ah, I see.
Well, those are exactly the type of people we have in this village."
The man was shocked and dismayed. "Oh no," he
thought, "I have made a terrible mistake in moving here."
But then, the very next day, another newcomer to the village
came to see the Zen master with the same question.
"Master," he said, "I am new to this village
and I'm not sure if I will like it here. Can you tell me if the people are
nice?"
The Zen master asked him, "Well, how were the people in
the town where you came from?"
The man smiled and said, "They were sweet and lived in
harmony. They cared for one another and for the land. They respected each other
and they were seekers of spirit."
The Zen master nodded sagely and said, "Ah, I see.
Well, those are exactly the type of people we have in this village."
The man was thrilled and relieved. "Oh wow," he
thought, "I have made the best decision in moving here."
The moral of the story, my friends, is that whatever you see in the world, the world will see in you.
The World is a mirror , it reflects whatever you want to see in the World.
If you see hope, see good, and see love, then the world will see the same in you.
But if you only see the nasty and greedy part of people, that is what they will see in you.
So be good to the
world and the world will be good to you. Give love to the world and the world
will give love to you.
